Getting Your Bike Ready for Winter
As the days get shorter and the weather turns damp and brisk, many cyclists start to put their bikes away. But for true mountain bikers, winter is just another invitation to ride - if you and your bike are ready for the challenge. At Simons Bike Shop, we know a bit of mud or frost needn’t stop your adventures. With a little preparation and some expert advice (no need to panic - we’ll keep things friendly), your trusty mountain bike can thrive all season long.
Why Winter Prep is Worth It
Riding through the winter is one of the best ways to keep your fitness ticking and make the most of quiet trails. However, winter conditions can be hard on bikes - the damp, grit, and salt on UK roads and trails can wear out components fast. With a bit of TLC before the deep cold arrives, you’ll stay safe, comfortable, and avoid unwelcome (and avoidable) repair bills.
Tyres: Grip is King in Winter
Start by looking at your tyres. Summer rubber is often too slick for winter riding. Consider fitting wider tyres with deep treads for better grip in mud or wet leaves. Some riders drop tyre pressure a little to increase the contact patch - ask in-store for guidance based on your bike and weight. If your tyres show cracks or the tread is worn flat, now’s the time to replace them. A fresh set is one of the biggest confidence-boosters in sloppy conditions!
Mudguards: Saving Your Back (and Bike) from the Muck
Mudguards aren’t just about keeping your bum dry - they protect your frame, suspension, and gears from the worst of the winter slime. Clip-on guards are a simple, affordable fix for most mountain bikes. A front mudguard helps keep grit out of your fork seals, while a rear guard spares your laundry. If you’ve never tried them, pop by the shop and we’ll show you how easy they are to fit.
Cleaning Routine: Your Bike’s Best Friend
Winter is the season of mud and road salt, both of which corrode metal parts and grind down components. Get into the habit of a quick clean after every ride. A gentle hose-down (never a pressure washer!) and a soft brush will do the trick, followed by drying with an old towel. Pay special attention to your chain, cassette, and derailleurs, as hidden grit can shorten their lifespan considerably.
Lubrication: The Right Oils for Wild Weather
A dry summer lube just won’t cut it when it’s wet and muddy. Swap to a wet-weather lubricant, which is thicker and clings to the chain in rain and sludge. Apply lube to a clean, dry chain and always wipe off the excess - a gummy chain can attract more dirt than you started with. Keeping cables and pivot points lubed will stop winter water from sneaking into places you don’t want it.
Brakes: Check Now, Stop Better Later
Wet, muddy conditions put your brakes through their paces. Now’s a good time to inspect your brake pads (rim or disc) - are they worn down, glazed, or making strange noises? Replace if needed. Double-check rotors or rims for warping and make sure your levers feel positive. Soggy brakes on a cold descent are nobody’s idea of fun!
Lights: Shine Bright and Stay Safe
Even if you aren’t planning to ride at night, winter light fades fast and weather can close in. Fit a good-quality front and rear light and check their batteries before every ride. Daytime running lights are a great shout for visibility, especially on gloomy days or shared paths.
Keeping Yourself Warm and Dry
While your bike needs prepping, so do you! Layer up, with a moisture-wicking base layer and a good waterproof top. Waterproof gloves, a beanie (or helmet cover), and shoe covers go a long way. A spare pair of dry socks in your bag can transform a damp day.
Pre-Ride Safety Check: Make it a Habit
Before every winter ride, quickly check:
- Tyre pressure and condition
- Brake response
- Chain lubrication
- Lights, if needed
- Bolts (especially stem and handlebars) A minute’s check can save a freezing roadside stop later.
